The Overthrow

In the middle of the last century in Persia, lived a woman named Tahirih. She was a follower of the Bab, the prophet founder of a new revelation. In those days, the people in power were killing the Babis, trying to snuff out the new religion. In fact, over 20,000 were martyred. Tahirih was a poetess and was well known throughout the land. On the night she was to be martyred, she told her executioners, " You may kill me as soon as you like, but you cannot stop the emancipation of women!" Tahirih was the first woman to give her life to champion the cause for women' rights. So we owe much to this beautiful heroine, who helped change the course of history and has given women the dignity and rights they have always deserved.
